                      VM (and Linux) Enthusiasts

October 14, 1999 Meeting

Meeting Agenda:

9:00 AM VM/ESA 2.4.0 Overview
On July 23rd, IBM made available the latest release of VM/ESA containing new hardware support, improved guest support, and lots of TCP/IP enhancements. The speaker will review these enhancements along with other recent improvements to VM/ESA.
The speaker will be Mr. Chuck Morse of the IBM Washington Systems Center.
10:30 AM Coffee Break
10:45 AM Fast WEB serving on VM
Velocity Software uses VM with TCP/IP as their WEB server, FTP server, Mail Server (using POP3), and for TELNET access.
In this session, the speaker will present what he has learned about measuring and tuning a VM WEB server, using the Velocity Software measurement tools: ESAMAP, ESAMON, and ESATCP. Understanding TCP/IP, network measurements, and the network applications, and tying all this information together to understand server performance has been quite a challenge.
You CAN do service level agreements, you can analyze traffic patterns, and you can do network analysis from VM.
The speaker will be Mr. Barton Robinson of Velocity Software, Inc.
12:00 PM Lunch Break (Lunch not provided)
1:30 PM Administration and Vendor Announcements
1:45 PM Y2K - Last Minute Gotcha's!
77 days left and counting! At this point, we are all tired of hearing about Y2K in the press. By now, all of us should have our Y2K upgrade and testing work completed. Or do we? As with every project of this magnitude, there will be some late discoveries and horror stories to be heard and to beware of.
We will also discuss whether to skip, or delay the January 2000 meeting, as well as plan for an "After the Y2K smoke cleared...." session to be presented at the next meeting.
All are invited to attend the last pre-Y2K CAVMEN meeting and share any VM and hardware related last minute Y2K discoveries and unexpected surprises to watch out for.
2:45 PM Coffee Break
3:00 PM Free-for-All
Members will attempt to answer any reasonable VM or hardware related questions. If you are having a problem and want to find out if others are experiencing it, or you are installing new hardware or software and want to find out what types of problems others have experienced, here is the place to find out.
Members are encouraged to bring ideas for future presentations and speakers to this meeting.
