                      VM (and Linux) Enthusiasts

October 18, 2012 Meeting

Meeting Agenda:

9:00 AM STASH Intro
This session is an introduction to the Smart Terminal Architecture in a Secure Hosting (STASH) environment. STASH utilizes the System z BladeCenter Extension (zBX) as a desktop hosting environment running trusted thin client software. Users can take advantage of the System z for computing and management capabilities, greatly reducing the number of servers and thin client deployment costs. Other technologies that complete the environment are workload management software and a fraud detection solution that mitigates insider threat. By combining mainframe virtualization management, security, and thin client technology, organizations will be able to take advantage of the power of the mainframe extended to trusted virtual desktop environments.
The speaker will be Len Santalucia, CTO of Vicom Infinity, Inc.

10:00 AM zEnterprise EC12 Update
08/28/12 IBM announced the zEnterprise. EC12 mainframe server, the most powerful and technologically advanced version of an IBM system that has been the linchpin of enterprise computing for 48 years. The new enterprise system features technologies that demonstrate IBMs ongoing commitment to meet the growing need to secure and manage critical information with the System z mainframe.
New, cutting-edge System z. capabilities for security and analytics dramatically boost cloud performance with help from IBM Research innovations.
zEC12 offers 25% more performance per core, over 100 configurable cores and 50% more total capacity than its predecessor.
The result of over $1 billion in IBM R&D investment and collaborative client input on today's enterprise system challenges
The speaker will be Len Santalucia, CTO of Vicom Infinity, Inc.

1:15 PM Administration and Vendor Announcements
1:30 PM Automation Scenarios for a z/VM Cluster and Linux on System z Guests
As the Linux on System z environment continues to grow, the need for software and solutions to manage this environment also grows. This session will provide updated information on automating operations in a z/VM and Linux on System z environment, including z/VM clusters.
Live demos can include how to:
* Automatically take action based on messages on z/VM service machines, on Linux guest consoles, and in Linux syslog data
* View and interact with live consoles, for both monitoring and debugging purposes
* Monitor and manage spool file and page space usage
* Send alerts to a central operations console (one per cluster) or a central alerting system, such as IBM Netcool/OMNIbus or other systems that accept SNMP traps
* Send e-mails based on console messages, spool usage, etc.
* Automatically archive logging data when a disk approaches full
The demos will use IBM's management software for z/VM and Linux on System z, but the presentation will include requirements for implementing the scenarios with other software.
The speaker will be Tracy Dean, Product Manager for IBM's management software for z/VM.

3:15 PM Backing Up and Restoring a z/VM Cluster and Linux on System z Guests
As the Linux on System z environment continues to grow, the need for software and solutions to manage this environment also grows. This session will review available practices for backing up and restoring data and disks for z/VM and Linux on System z, including a review of the pros and cons of each approach. For example, how does using z/OS to back up your z/VM and Linux environment compare to using tools on z/VM and Linux. We'll also review how your backup procedures should change if you have a z/VM V6.2 cluster.
The speaker will be Tracy Dean, Product Manager for IBM's management software for z/VM.

4:30 PM Free-for-All
Members will attempt to answer any reasonable VM or hardware related questions. If you are having a problem and want to find out if others are experiencing it, or you are installing new hardware or software and want to find out what types of problems others have experienced, here is the place to find out.
Members are encouraged to bring ideas for future presentations and speakers to this meeting.
